Hocking Hills State Park
The main attraction of a stay in this area is the fabulous outdoor opportunities afforded by Hocking Hills State Park, a renowned area filled with fascinating caves, beautiful waterfalls, and well-maintained year-round trails. Families who love to hike will be in heaven here, as there are easily several days’ worth of walking trips to enjoy right in this one park. Since it can get busy in the height of summertime, you’ll have the advantage of being right nearby to enjoy the trails first thing in the morning, before the crowds come.
The most popular (for good reason!) attraction at the park is Old Man’s Cave, which was home to an explorer of the region in the late 1700s. Several trail options wind through the area, both on the canyon floor and along the rim above. The canyon gets crowded during busy times (because it is amazing), so head there first thing in the morning to enjoy it in peace. This truly scenic gorge cuts 150 feet into the sandstone, so you’ll have many layers of the Earth to admire, as well as several waterfalls and the caves themselves.
South of Old Man’s Cave, you have the option to take longer walks to other popular spots, or you can drive to them if you’re not much of a hiker. Admire other cave systems such as the large Ash Cave, which is a short but steep half-mile loop hike or take a five-mile loop trail and see Old Man’s Cave and Whispering Cave all in one go. The whole family can enjoy a visit to Rock House, even if your young ones aren’t able to take a long hike yet; this amazing loop takes you one mile through a very cool cave that seems like you’d want to live there!
For those who prefer to travel a bit faster down the path, there are also two mountain bike trails available at Hocking Hills State Park. Each is about two miles long, and one is more challenging than the other. They’re located in the northern part of the park, so plan accordingly if you feel like going for a trail ride!
Other Nearby Activities
If you’re staying for long enough that you’ll exhaust the activities available at Hocking Hills State Park, there are tons of other things to do just a short driving distance away. Explore other nearby state parks, like Lake Logan or Lake Hope State Parks, both of which offer opportunities for boating and swimming. Lake Logan is also a great place to fish, and you can easily make a day trip of it by packing a picnic for the family! Those who like to explore by bicycle will appreciate a day spent on the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway, which runs from Nelsonville to Athens, alongside the river and through the Wayne National Forest. If you prefer to explore by horseback, there are numerous stables in the area that can get you out on the trail in no time.
