Watching the Leaves Change in Hocking Hills State Park
Located very near to all of our rentals is the magnificent Hocking Hills State Park, which is popular all year round, but perhaps particularly so in fall, when the leaves do their magical thing. Day hikers will enjoy the plethora of trails on offer, as well as the fact that there’s so much to see along them. Whether you’re in the mood for a quarter mile hike or an all-day trek, Hocking Hills State Park can easily accommodate your needs.
There are many popular spots to check out in the park, all of which are filled with interesting things to look at, as well as perfect for photo opportunities. One of the most incredible spots is also the most popular, so try to head there early in the day to beat the crowds. Old Man’s Cave, named for the trapper who lived here in isolation in the late 1700s (and is buried here today), is located in a beautiful 150-foot-deep sandstone gorge, boasting multiple waterfalls. You can stroll the floor of the gorge and check out the cave itself, or you can walk along the rim, peering down. Either way, its glory in autumn is something to behold! For a five-mile day hike, take the one-way loop trail that leads you past Old Man’s Cave to Whispering Cave, another large, recessed cave, by way of a cool swinging bridge. If you prefer the least crowded hike, but don’t mind if it’s strenuous, check out the Cantwell Cliffs. This rugged trail leads through narrow valleys and along high cliffs and consists of two one-mile loop trails that each take over an hour to walk, due to all the climbing.
Kick Back, Adult Style
When you’ve hiked as much as you can handle for the day, why not relax with a visit to a place that’s just made for it? Hocking Hills Winery is a family-owned spot that offers up some of the region’s best wines, serving tastings in a beautiful setting. It’s hard to beat their friendly vibe, and you can even bring along your (leashed, well-behaved) dog! Order up a cheese platter, and sample what’s sure to be some of your new favorite vintages.
If you’re more of a beer person, stop by Brewery 33, located in nearby Logan. With a wide variety of brews, ranging from the more traditional to experimental seasonal offerings, Brewery 33 boasts the largest beer garden in southeast Ohio. It’s also a kid-friendly spot, and while they don’t have a restaurant, they do have a great selection of locally produced snacks, like tortilla chips and beef jerky.
When you’ve had all you can handle, why not take a stroll through the local antique shops, browsing for treasure? You never know what you might find during a magical Columbus Day vacation to the beautiful Hocking Hills.
