Step Outdoors
While your cabin may be so cozy that you never want to leave, the real attractions of Hocking Hills are outdoors. This area of Ohio is renowned for numerous hiking trails, gorgeous waterfalls, and fascinating caves to explore, and when you want to head further afield in search of dining and shopping opportunities, you’ll be able to find them in nearby towns.
Start your explorations at Old Man’s Cave, which is the most popular in the area for many good reasons: it offers a variety of trail choices, it makes for gorgeous photo opportunities, and it has an interesting backstory! The cave was home to several loner-type settlers in the area in the late 1700s, and a few of them are buried there as well. See for yourself if you think this cave would be a good spot to set up camp! Old Man’s Cave is situated in a half mile long gorge which cuts through 150 feet of solid sandstone, so you can actually peer into the Earth’s past as you admire the walls. The area features two waterfalls, which freeze beautifully in winter if you’re up for a cold-weather hike. Old Man’s Cave can get quite crowded during the busiest times of the week, but since you’re staying so near, you have the advantage of visiting in the early mornings before anyone else gets here for a hike. Enjoy the trail through the middle of the gorge first, as it gets the busiest, then head up to the ridge trail for a view from above.
A little ways south, you’ll find another interesting cave, known as Ash Cave. Serious hikers can walk here from Old Man’s Cave, as all the trail systems connect, but if you’re looking for a shorter walk, you can just drive here and do the Ash Cave loop. Although it’s only about half a mile, it does include a strenuous climb up a steep flight of stairs. Ash Cave is a great place to see spring wildflowers in bloom, as well as to enjoy a beautiful seasonal waterfall.
If you’re looking for a pleasant day hike, check out the five-mile loop trail to Whispering Cave, one of the larger recess caves in the trail system, which also takes you past Old Man’s Cave. It’s a great way to see both in one day, and the trail includes a cool swinging bridge along the route. All trails at Hocking Hills State Park are one-way, so you must plan on doing the whole five miles before you set out. A bonus: almost all the trails at Hocking Hills are pet-friendly, as long as your dog is leashed and well behaved. Trails are open from dawn to dusk in all seasons, so feel free to enjoy them at any time of year!
